This woman presented with severe TMD. She had total pain on her right side, from the top of her head to her torso, apparently due to a right unilateral tongue thrust. She was not a mouth breather but poor habit patterns and incorrect mouth muscle patterns eventually led to this issue. She had been scheduled for bilateral jaw joint surgery, but she was able to avoid this through provider teamwork and a combined treatment plan of myofunctional therapy, mandibular splint therapy and orthodontics to correct the bite and give her stability.

See how everything pulls to the right – including her bite – in the first picture? After treatment, she looks at you from the center, and her bite has shifted closer to midline. She no longer experiences TMD symptoms, and even after 10 years, reports being stable and pain-free.
